Dr. Andrew Seal

Dr. Andrew Seal, a proud husband, father, and grandfather, is Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Surgery at the University of British Columbia. He graduated from Guy’s Hospital Medical School in London, England, in 1969 and came to Canada in 1975 to join the UBC General Surgery Residency Program, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1979. Dr. Seal joined the UBC Department of Surgery in 1981 and became a staff member at the UBC Health Sciences Centre Hospital, where he practiced until 2003, when he moved to St. Paul’s Hospital and remained there until his retirement in 2010. In 1994, Dr. Seal was appointed the first Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the Faculty of Medicine. During his tenure, he initiated the annual medical student Spring Gala concerts and organized the first student, faculty, and alumni art exhibitions. On completion of his term in 1999, he became a visiting scholar at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge, where he studied the linkages between the history of medicine and the history of art. Outside medicine, Dr. Seal is an artist himself, having attended art school in England, and from 1982 to 1987, the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, as a part-time student. Among Dr. Seal’s academic awards and distinctions, he received a Killam Teaching Prize in 2000, the Faculty of Medicine’s Career Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching in 2008, and the William Webber Award from the UBC Medical Undergraduate Society in 2010. Since his retirement, Dr. Seal enjoys providing surgical assistance to his colleagues at St. Paul’s Hospital, occasional undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and painting in his art studio at home, but most importantly spending time with his three beautiful grandchildren.
